Many Different Medications
There are almost 100 different headache medicines available, and finding the one that is right for you requires that the doctor know what you want. Headache medications are available in several different kinds of delivery formulations. Sometimes patients can actually pick the delivery that is preferable for them. Examples of the different ways to take medications are as follows::
* Oral tablets * Orally disintegrating tablets (dissolve in your mouth so you do not have to swallow with liquid) * Nasal sprays * Injections under the skin (subcutaneous, sc) * Rectal suppositories
You will need to discuss with your doctor what’s important to you & describe your symptoms & life style so your plan will fit in with your lifestyle. The following questions will help your physician determine what is important to you & your treatment plan.
How rapid do you want pain relief, do you want complete loss of head pain, no headache recurrence, no nausea, no drowsiness, easy to take, low risk of side effects. Rate the questions on a rate of high, medium, low.
After evaluating your answers the doctor should be able to decide if your pain is considered to be abortive, also known as “acute” or preventive. Acute medications are for occasional use & are used for aborting an attack and preventive medicines are used to help reduce the severity & frequency of attacks. After you have begun your treatment plan you are not feeling the results you think you should, call or visit your doctor to discuss an alternative medication. There are 100’s to choose from.
